Now the Tempest

Imagine my surprise when upon my arrival at The Professor's home I found that he was engaged to another!

His intended was an elegant lady named Esme.  I had made her acquaintance many times before, and The Professor had been in love with her for years.  She was beautiful, sophisticated and well-read, all perfect for attracting The Professor, but she had always seemed so disinterested, and I thought he'd given up the hunt for good.  That's what I thought since I believed his affections had turned toward me.  Clearly I had been mistaken.

After hearing the news I sat in numb shock through the rest of the evening.  The Professor's concern for me was evident in his every look, though he never spoke a word of it.  Esme was a gracious hostess and after barely an hour, escorted me to my room so that I might retire for the night.

Once in my room, the feelings that were so elusive on the journey here now crashed upon me like waves.  How ironic to have realized my heart's true love in the very moment I lost him.  That night I did what I had not allowed myself through three years in The Jungle.  I curled up like a child and wept into my pillow.
